O'Higgins are quartz-bearing black,
grey and reddish brown
low-metamorphic clay slates and
phylitte slates of the Trinity
Peninsula Formation. They are very
brittle, fine-laminated in the mm-
and cm-range and incline with about
60 to 80 degrees to NW.
Because of these characteristics
and the high clay mineral content
and the expansive force resulting
from this the slates are highly
susceptible to weathering and mostly
covered by detrital layers. Only
tectonicly less stressed parts and
parts resistant to weathering stick
out from these detrital masses. These
have a linear geometry and show strong
cleavings. The instrusions of 0.5m to
1.5m thick vein rocks, which pass
through the slates, are significantly
younger. The pillar with the antenna
is bolted into one of these veins,
which are very resistant to weathering.
An ASHTECH Z18 GPS+GLONASS operated
from 2001-02-09 until 2003-01-27 at
the ERS/VLBI-Station GARS O'Higgins /
Antarctica with the four character ID
OHIZ, DOMES Number 66008M004.
Because of the expansion and of
construction works in the Chilenean
Antarctic Base the antenna
for the GPS+GLONASS Permanent Tracking
Station OHIZ was moved to another
pillar K3, DOMES Number 66008M006.
Number 66008M005, 2003-02-06,
new four character ID OHI3.
In addition and parallel also a
ROGUE SNR-8000 / ACT SNR-8000 ACT
operated from 1995-02-14 until
2002-02-20 at the ERS/VLBI- Station
